Last fall, American baritone Richard Taylor sang his first Scarpia for Anchorage Opera, and appeared as soloist in the world premiere of Earnestine Rodgers-Robinson's The Nativity at Carnegie Hall.

Last season, Mr. Taylor returned to the Memphis Symphony as guest soloist in a concert version of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. He debuted with Opera San Jose singing the title role in Verdi's Rigoletto, and made his concert debut in Barcelona, Spain as soloist in the Verdi Requiem. He also made as acclaimed company debut with the Nevada Opera as Mozart's Leporello, and appeared as a soloist in Bach's Mass in b minor with the Memphis and Bakersfield symphony orchestras. Previously, he performed as soloist with the Pacific Chorale (Handel's Belshazzar's Feast), the Bakersfield Symphony (Handel's Messiah), reprised his engaging portrayal of Rossini's Figaro and debuted in the title role of Verdi's Rigoletto in Los Angeles.

Richard Taylor began his professional singing career with Houston Grand Opera's US and European tours of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, in which he sang the roles of Robbins and Porgy. He has worked with many noted conductors throughout the world, and made his Carnegie Hall debut in the spring of 1999 as a soloist in the Requiems of Mozart and Faure. As part of John Hopkins University's celebration of the musical genius of George Gershwin. Last season, he also appeared as "special guest soloist" with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra in a Gershwin Gala, and returned to perform the songs of Charles Ives with the orchestra this spring.

A native of Michigan, Richard Taylor received both his Bachelor and Masters degrees in  voice from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he was awarded first prize in their Concerto Competition. In addition to his considerable talents as a concert and opera singer, Mr. Taylor is an accomplished professional jazz bass player who continues to enjoy a wide variety of performance experiences. Mr. Taylor has worked extensively in Europe, especially during the period in which he resided in Switzerland.

He has also performed with Michigan Opera Theatre, the Pacific Chorale, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles, the Southbend Symphony, the Long Beach Opera, the University of Michigan Chamber Choir and the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Taylor is featured vocalist on Albany Records' CD Shades Of Blue, which highlights new symphonic works by African-American composers.
