Last fall, American baritone Richard
Taylor sang his first Scarpia for Anchorage Opera, and appeared as soloist in
the world premiere of Earnestine Rodgers-Robinson's The Nativity at Carnegie
Hall.
Last season, Mr. Taylor returned to the Memphis
Symphony as guest soloist in a concert version of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. He
debuted with Opera San Jose singing the title role in Verdi's Rigoletto, and
made his concert debut in Barcelona, Spain as soloist in the Verdi Requiem. He
also made as acclaimed company debut with the Nevada Opera as Mozart's Leporello,
and appeared as a soloist in Bach's Mass in b minor with the Memphis and
Bakersfield symphony orchestras. Previously, he performed as soloist with the
Pacific Chorale (Handel's Belshazzar's Feast), the Bakersfield Symphony (Handel's
Messiah), reprised his engaging portrayal of Rossini's Figaro and debuted in the
title role of Verdi's Rigoletto in Los Angeles.
Richard Taylor began his professional singing
career with Houston Grand Opera's US and European tours of George Gershwin's
Porgy and Bess, in which he sang the roles of Robbins and Porgy. He has worked
with many noted conductors throughout the world, and made his Carnegie Hall
debut in the spring of 1999 as a soloist in the Requiems of Mozart and Faure. As
part of John Hopkins University's celebration of the musical genius of George
Gershwin. Last season, he also appeared as "special guest soloist" with the
Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra in a Gershwin Gala, and returned to perform the
songs of Charles Ives with the orchestra this spring.
A native of Michigan, Richard Taylor received
both his Bachelor and Masters degrees in voice from University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor where he was awarded first prize in their Concerto
Competition. In addition to his considerable talents as a concert and opera
singer, Mr. Taylor is an accomplished professional jazz bass player who
continues to enjoy a wide variety of performance experiences. Mr. Taylor has
worked extensively in Europe, especially during the period in which he resided
in Switzerland.
He has also performed with Michigan Opera
Theatre, the Pacific Chorale, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Spirit Chorale
of Los Angeles, the Southbend Symphony, the Long Beach Opera, the University of
Michigan Chamber Choir and the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Taylor is featured vocalist on Albany
Records' CD Shades Of Blue, which highlights new symphonic works by
African-American composers.
